Leonardo commenced the painting of Mona Lisa in 1503, working on it approximately four years and keeping it himself for some years after. The Mona Lisa is an oil painting, with a cottonwood panel as the surface. The Mona Lisa has survived for six centuries without ever having been restored.

The Mona Lisa disappeared in 1911, from the Louvre in France. Pablo Picasso was the first suspect, but he was exonerated. The masterpiece was lost for two years.
